Sadly, with the current climate, more and more people are looking for jobs. As a recruiter, this may seem like a good thing – having more candidates to choose from. Having more candidates to choose from is great, but not if they aren’t the right candidates. It can take a lot of time to sift through applications and pick out the best bunch. That pool just grew a huge amount, instead of 10 applications per job, you might get 200 now. Here’s how to find top talent in a growing pool.

1. Spend time on your job spec

It can be tempting to rush through a job spec to get it posted as soon as possible so you can start receiving applications through. Your job spec is the most important part of the process - If you don’t put enough detail in your spec, you’ll end up getting applications from candidates that don’t match your job. Make sure when you’re writing your job spec you include as much information as possible. This includes the skills, knowledge and experience required for the job. Including salary can often help qualify the candidates you get through as well. Check out our post on how to write a great job posting: LINK

2. Know what you’re looking for

When you’re looking for a candidate, you want to make sure they’re a close match with your job spec. Of course, it’s not going to be a 100% match, but you want to make sure you’re sending in the right person otherwise it could reflect badly on you and your business. Use the information you have to review each of your applications – making sure the candidate has the skill set, experience and knowledge required of the role. It might be a good idea to make yourself a checklist from the job spec so you can easily tick off when a candidate matches that list.

3. Know where to look

In a world of connection, there are plenty of ways to find top talent. If you want to add prospective candidates to your list, you can use LinkedIn profiles to find matching candidates for your roles – using their profile information to match them as a quality candidate. Job boards have a great functionality where you can search their entire database of candidates, both active and passive candidates. Most job boards will allow you to filter your searches so you can really target the candidates you’re looking for.

4. Build up your talent pool

What if you’ve found a really great candidate, but they’re not quite right for the roles you currently have, or maybe they aren’t interested. This is the perfect time to start building up your talent pool – retaining a candidate’s information can help you fill a role faster in the future, as you’ll have a ready-made talent pool full of quality candidates to choose from.

Finding top talent just became a lot easier with these steps. It doesn’t have to be like finding a needle in a haystack, if you make sure you’re prepared, know what you’re looking for, where to look and have a talent pool to choose from.
